As someone new to ubuntu, you should really investigate what packages are
available using apt (apt-get for command line, synaptic for GUI), and what
repositories are out there.

If you edit /etc/apt/sources.list and uncomment the lines with "universe" in
them, you will be able to install x11vnc without doing any compiling of
sources.

sudo apt-get install x11vnc

I just installed it myself, as I have from time to time needed to get access
to my current session remotely.

Thanks.
