I've seen this type of error most often when networking isn't up to snuff.
Check your network to be sure it's running and then ping archive.ubuntu.com
to make sure you can reach it. (From the console: "ifconfig" to see if
it shows a good address for eth0, and "ping archive.ubuntu.com" to see if
you're getting a response.)
