Yes, it's bad form to reply to oneself, but here goes (below)....

Okay, by way of an "update" of sorts, I did the install up to the point of
committing the first partitioning, then backed out. I told it to use the
largest contiguous free space on the drive (which is the unformatted 9.7 GB
partition [or should be]), and what I got back then was:

The partition tables of the following devices are changed:
	IDE1 master (hda)
The following partitions are going to be formatted:
partition #3 of IDE1 master (hda) as ext3
partition #8 of IDE1 master (hda) as swap

...then I backed out, as it wasn't enough info (at least in understandable
form for me) for me to be comfortable.

Again, since my current allotment is:
hda1    NTFS            XP Pro          14 GB
        empty   unformatted     empty           9.7 GB
        hda5    ext3            / (Mandriva)    5.8 GB
        hda6    swap            swap (")        499 MB
        hda7    ext3            /home (")       6.5 GB
am I correct in assuming that Ubuntu was taking the empty 9.7 GB area and
setting up two partitions, hda3 and hda8 (what happened to 2 and 4?) for
install and swap, respectively. If so, and it looks to others like all is
okay at that point, would it *later* give me the option(s) of setting
up /, /home, etc.?

Guys (and gals), I'm really sorry to be such a tentative PITA about all this,
but it's new territory for me. I appreciate the patience and input you've all
had so far.

Thx.
