This is unsupported and a very bad idea. It's documented somewhere, but
I can't find it atm.
It might work or not depending on the state of sid, but you never can be
sure what remains lying around. I did it once (to Warty or Hoary IIRC)
and had all kinds of bugs nobody else could reproduce, and most turned
out to be caused by the odd stray conffile or similar.
If you have /home on a different partition, it is faster and safer to
reinstall
