How do I stop run-parts?

After being away, I booted up my dual opteron Dapper machine, and after
going for a meal I discover that run-parts is hogging my cpus and the
temperature is up to to 60C.

 8784 root      25   0    88    4    0 R   79  0.0  82:22.59 run-parts
11839 root      25   0    88    4    0 R   78  0.0  22:35.98 run-parts
11073 logcheck  35  10    88    4    0 R   41  0.0  26:54.21 run-parts

doing kill <PID> doesn't do anything.  I've had a similar problem
before with Breezy.  Help!
