GRUB Error 16 at stage 1.5

I have a machine
it has 1GB of memory
3200+ amd athalon 64

300GB harddrive with 3 partitions
1st partition is windows XP NTFS
2nd partition is Fat 32
3rd partition EXT3 w/ubuntu

Its dual boot as you can see.

It has been running nicely since June.

Recently the update managaer installed a new 2.6.? 386
kernel. I don't know the exact #.
I had shut it down but was winXP for a little bit.
I had left the machine running for a couple days.
When I had come back it had rebooted itself for some
reason. I"m not sure why.

It was stuck in the booting mode and had this

GRUB
stage 1.5
Error 16

It did not make it to the grub boot menu.

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software
problem.

I am now running off the live CD. The Live CD did not
mount any of the partitions on my harddrive. I don't
know if it should or not.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?

If I can find a way to mount the harddrive maybe I can
run fsck?
