Interesting problem, I'm sorry I don't know what happened. Can I suggest
you file a bug at launchpad?
Check if it's already there and then file it against the package (my
guess) xserver-xorg-driver-ati

To check if your need to install ati proprietary free driver go though
the system help, desktop guide for the 3d cards section of hardware.
Instructions for testing and installing are there.
