lvm in desktop edition install?

I'm setting up mythtv and was following the recommendations on creating
an lvm volume for my media, and I initially was installing using the
server edition. That installer nicely let me configure the group and
volume and choose jfs for the filesystem on it. I eventually decided I
wanted the graphical package tools and browser, so began reinstalling
with the desktop edition. that partitioner seems to have no options
for lvm, but my lvm config still shows, so I try to continue with the
existing partition layout. However, even though the partitioner shows
hda3 as lvm, and I can view the volume under the lvm device, the
install summary before execution shows that partition as ext3, and when
it begins working it says "formatting partiion 3 with ext3..." and then
I get a message that it failed.
I'm confused as to why it would be trying to format that lvm partition
with ext3, when that's not what it showed in the partitioner. lvm
doesn't seem very supported in the desktop install?
