I hadn't considered that - I never knew that environment variable existed.
I'll be sure to do that next time I upgrade. It could however be an option
in update-manager to switch noninteractive mode on in the GUI upgrade
manager.
Just because it can be done 'behind the scenes' in an unofficial sort of
shell scripty way, doesn't mean it shouldn't make the mainstream of the GUI,
surely.
