There is one case where I have logged in to gnome as root: When I am
doing dangerous file deletions.
Sometimes I have needed to do "rm -rf whatever" on files that are not
owned by kentborg, and it is very dangerous. Much safer--at least for
me--is to drag icons around. I can shift through things, I can see
what I am manipulating, I can drag things around until all the cruft I
am cleaning up is gone, I can empty the trash once it all looks good.
A command line forces me to do symbolic manipulations, symbolic
manipulations are much more powerful, and so, much more dangerous.
Dragging icons is so specific, so concrete, so much safer.
Admittedly, I haven't done this many times, but the last time I did, I
felt much better about pushing the button.
Yes, running Gnome is dangerous--and certainly don't web browse while
root. So, what is a safe way to do GUI file manipulating as root?
