HPLaserjet4200 Printing Help Requested

Hello,
I am new here. I could not see the archives yet. So if this is already
discussed , my apologies.
I am trying to install and use my HP Laserjet 4200 in Ubuntu 6.06. It was
working very well in k/ubuntu 5.10.
[ I have searched ubuntuforums and googled all over, but could not find any
helpful hints suitable to this situation yet. Hence the post.]
Machine: [I]IBM NetVista 512MB , 40GB PC[/I]. HPLJ4200 is correctly
recognised. (BIOS Settings Automatic/EPPorECP)

dmesg entries
[I]PnPBIOS parport
parport pc style  at 0x378 irq7 dma 1 PCSPP TRISTATE COMPAT ECP DMA
lp0 using parport (interrupt driven)
userspace parallel port driver[/I]

Any kind of printing (eg test page or from an application) results in the
[U]document staying in the Queue. No output in the printer[/U]. (The setup
works very well in windoze. It is dual bootable)

/var/log/messages shows "[I]open print channel failed: will retry in 30
seconds[/I]". The same thing appears in http://localhost:631/ printers tab

and dmesg shows :"[I]ppdev0 negotiated back to compatibility mode because
user-space forgot unregistered pardevice[/I]"  followed by a "[I]registered
pardevice"[/I]

/dev/lp0 and /dev/parport0 owned by root:lp

Tried upgrading cups to 1.2.1 experimental but still the same problem
recurs. So downgraded  back to 1.2.0. Restarted cupsys hpijs etc - still
same situation continues.

Could anyone help me ? :Thanks in advance.
