pcmcia not working after installing xubuntu

What worked for me was

sudo modprobe pcmcia && modprobe pcmcia_core

sudo cardmgr

without having to eject the card.



I've had many a struggle since switching to Linux six years ago, and
always found a solution, but thought this one had me beat. The card
works under kernel 2.6.12-9, and I've found elsewhere that this seems
to be a kernel bug, so fixing my setup seemed hopeless and I thought I
would have to wait for a repaired kernel to come out. Your solution was
my last hope. Three nights of struggling, and the answer was so simple
(but an approach I've never needed before). Bless you seven ways.
