It might be easier to install the following from your synaptic package
manager or with apt-get/aptitude:

gnuchess
xboard

xboard is in the universe repository. See

Running xboard will give you an interactive game against the machine, and
quite a few options. There are other prettier front-ends, like eboard,
which also works with gnuchess. Gnome-chess is quite similar to xboard,
and looks pretty clunky ( just installed it to have a look )
