X doesn't start after mplayer install

I just installed (I think) mplayer according to these directions:
http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu#How_to_install_Multimedia_Player_.28MPlayer.29_with_Plug-in_for_Mozilla_Firefox
When I did, it seemed to be installing/removing/configuring a lot of
packages, but I just said yes to all. Now I restarted my computer and the X
server isn't working. I set my xorg.conf file back to the original one,
even, but that did no good. When I run "sudo startx" from the command line
it says:

xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.8584
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority

X: warning; process set to priority -1 instead of requested priority 0
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Danny
