ubuntu 6.06 install - GRUB hard disk error on boot

Hi,

New to UBUNTU, I installed (sequentially:-) the 6.06
version of the server, kubuntu and ubuntu.  After each
install I tried to reboot from the hard disk but
always get a GRUB hard disk error message.  I am
running an IBM Intellistation, dual processor with the
aic7xxx disk controller. It boots fine if I choose the
"Boot from first hard drive" option of the boot menu
after an install.  I've tried re-installing grub with
no success.  Has anyhone had this problem and, even
better, solved it?
