ubuntu 6.06 install - GRUB hard disk error on boot

The error message is GRUB Hard Disk Error
and occurs immediately after the system tries booting.
 

I have since updated the bios and SCSI disk controller
code, but no improvement.  The controller is an AIC
7899.
