Thanks. That sounds a great idea, and might help me be able to compile
again.
I've spent to much time with RH/Mandrale before coming to Ubuntu, and I
think my problems might be similar to some that come to Ubuntu with an
experience of another distribution than Debian. We used to compile stuff
easily and can't realise we'll have to learn some things from scratch
again (in my case it's more that I don't have the time any more to
tinkle for days).
I've been used to distributions where you could specify the type of uses
you would do of your install, and just choosing "development something"
(sometimes split in two, adding the choice to do X development) would
enable me to compile almost anything without having to care about
installing manually extra stuff.
That would be a nice option in Ubuntu.
I know it takes space, but I had 3g partitions still ok with all that
stuff, two or three times more programs and at least 2 desktops
(Gnome+KDE) and a few window managers. Since Ubuntu already takes that
much space only with Gnome and a few apps, I wouldn't care to sacrifice
a few more space to get stuff that I would at least actually need.
