In Gnome (on your mothers machine) there is an option, Remote access (or
similar). If you enable it, it runs a VNC server. You can then use
xvncviewer to access the desktop - your mother will need to be logged in
for this to work.
I'm not currently booted into my Dapper system and so can't tell you
exactly where to enable it but it is accessible off the 'System' Tab on
the Panel and in Administration or some such.
