opening docs from evolution in OO.o 2 (Dapper)

hi all
I got a tech support question a few days ago i dont know the answer to,
being a very un-office oriented person.
In Debian Sarge (OpenOffice.org 1.1.x) when someone tried to open a .doc
file it would open in office in read/write mode, so they could fix the
page settings from letter-> a4, and any minor tidy ups (doc in office
fixing) before printing.
In Dapper that no longer occurs. Docs now open in read only, and to do
the above changes requires quite a number of steps (open doc -> save ->
open saved copy -> edit -> print iirc).
Is this an office or evolution issue? and is there a setting to change
it to be more like it was under Sarge? Sorry if its really obvious, but
office just isnt my area :)
