Screen resolution problems

I've just bought a new monitor - a 17" TFT to replace my old 15". I've
used dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to (I thought..) reconfigure the
system to recongnize the higher resolution capabilities of the monitor.
If I look through xorg.conf, it shows 1280x1024 as the prefered
resolution, and has the new monitor correctly identified.

However, Gnome is not convinced. The system is still coming up in
1024x768, and that is the maximum resolution that is offered by the
Preferences > Screen Resolution option.

What have I done wrong? How do I get Gnome to recognize and use the
higher resolution capabilities of the new monitor?

Any help appreciated.
