Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on external USB HD

Is there a search interface to this mailing list's archives somewhere? I
found the archives, but didn't see any way to search them.
So...
Following the directions here (
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=80811), I was able to get
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed to an external USB HD. However, I still can't get
it to boot from the drive. I can boot from the install/live CD, chroot to
the USB drive and everything works perfectly. I just need to get it to boot
from the USB drive. I installed grub to the MBR of the USB drive. When I
power cycle my laptop (Dell Latitude D800), I can hit F12 for a "One time
boot menu" and choose to boot from the USB drive. Then, the grub menu comes
up and I choose the first entry to boot Ubuntu. It begins to boot but then
hangs with the message "Waiting for root filesystem..." or something
similar. If I hit CTRL-F1 everything looks normal, but if I then hit
CTRL-F7 to switch back to the graphic boot screen, I see:
udevd-event[1888]: wait_for_sysfs: waiting for
'/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-6/1-6.4/1-6.4:1.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/bus'
failed
I'm assuming that the problem is related to the modules for USB
functionality not properly loading during the startup process. The modules
I have in /etc/mkinitramfs/modules are:
ehci-hcd
uhci-hcd
usb-storage
usbcore
usbhid
scsi_mod
sd_mod
And, yes, I did add "WAIT=12" to the top of my
/etc/mkinitramfs/initramfs.conf and recreated the initrd.img with
'mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-9-386 /lib/modules/2.6.12-9-386'
while chroot'ed to the USB drive.
Any suggest would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert Aldridge
