Dapper Installation (Very Confused)

I am in no way a linux novice but ubuntu leaves me confused.
I upgraded from an up-to-date brezzy to dapper and had a thrashing CPU (which no one could help with on this mailing list)
I then tried a fresh install of dapper from CD but couldn't get past 'configure X' on the install start and also found a checksum error in the pkgs.
Finally installed a bare bones breezy (as advised to do from the list) and then upgraded ro dapper.
Everything seemed to be okay but I think it stopped while setting openoffice as all I had on the terminal was (arg: 23) (sth like that)
I typed 'echo $?' to see the return code and it was 0 even though I thought sth had gone wrong.
No system tools appeared in the menu and no openoffice etc.
CPU was running better but still at 7% while idle.
I have now installed kubuntu and even so, some tools seem to be missing.
apt-get -f install says upto date.
Also, on starting linux, I've lost the fancy startup screen that I had after my initial upgrade from breezy to dapper. All I get now is the standard output ............... [ok]
Is anyone confused by reading this ;) Because any distro worth its salt, shouldn't be so wildly inconsistent.
Where am I in my dapper experience ?
I'm sure they'll be more questions.
