I was able to fix my sound issue this weekend. I'm not sure this will
help everyone, but it may point you in the right direction.
After the security upgrade I preformed on 2006.06.17, it appears that
the DSP output port on my sound card was activated where before it
was not. The DSP port overrode the analog output port that I actually
use. The setting switch for these ports does not appear in either the
Gnome or KDE mixer programs. Only by running "alsamixer" or
"alsamixergui" was I able to shut off the DSP output. Once that was
done, the sound on my machine behaved normally.
I hope this helps others in the same situation.
