I've just installed kino 0.9.0 and it's looking good. Can be hard to
start with and you'll need to ask for help to get dv capture over
firewire working. I suggest you sort out these issues yourself before
you recommend he try it. It drove me utterly crazy for quite a while -
but good help is out there.
