Well you did help.  It wasn't any of that, but it got me headed in the right 
direction.  This particular machine is very old and has an odd disk setup.  I 
am discovering that this box and software raid do not play nice together.  
Once I re-synched the two drives it booted the correct kernel.

So, it turned out to be something very machine dependent that almost certainly 
will never happen to anyone else.  The good news for me is that within a 
month this box will be retired.
