terminal problem in ubuntu

You already have a terminal window available.  Go to 'Applications >
Accessories > Terminal' for a basic terminal.  You can maximize it, if
you want it bigger.

For info on using sudo in the terminal to run apt-get, have a look at
this page:  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo

Lastly, Synaptic is a graphical version of apt-get.  Apt-get is in the
package apt, which you _will_ see in Synaptic.  Apt-get will not run if
Synaptic is open.  Use one or the other at any one time.

What motherboard drivers do you need to unpack?  I have a very new mb
with an AMD64 and I haven't had to install anything special.  It all
worked 'out of the box'.
