HP Pavilion zd8215us and video

finally got Dapper Flight 5 going on my laptop, and by the way, I can 
see my windows partition now!

but had to go into xorg.conf on someone's advice and change display 
driver =vesa instead of ati in order to get it to boot after install.

This limits me to resolution of 1024 x 768!!

Monitor is detected as a generic monitor, how do I tell it it is an lcd?

it would be a shame to run 1024 by 768 when card/lcd are capable of 1400 
by 900

advice?  help?
