I don't know if the following advice works or not, I haven't tested it,
but it might be worth a try.

If you were operating from the command line, to enter a string instead
of a hex key, you prepend "s:" to it. Perhaps the gui can pass this
straight through to the backend tools.

Ie, try entering     s:yourpassphrase   into the Network Manager...
