cloning ubuntu on different hardware systems (x86)

Just a question,
why not make the partition on the new disk, and then use rsync to copy
the data over.
Or use this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=81311

backup up your excisting configuration.
install ubuntu on the new disk and then use the backup to create the
exact same system on the new disk.
