I agree with Sven, look at what Ubuntu can do for you, since you're new
to ubuntu and linux/gnu I suggest you avoid the command line. It can
kill your system if you type something wrong, and it is not needed very
often.
First go into (and I assume you have installed breezy) Application > Add
applications and start learning how that works by installing a few
things. Learn from there how repositories can be added.
Once you got the idea of that programme go into System > Administration
> Synaptic package manager and you'll see that it can do even more.
If you've done all that and still can't find a programme to do whatever
that windows software was for, then ask this list for suggested
software, if that still doesn't give you what you need _then_ you start
thinking about using wine and downloading packages manually.
