Thinkpad numeric keypad doesn't do numbers

I take it back; when I boot with the external keyboard connected, the
keypad works as expected.  Not only that, but the external numlock
causes the thinkpad keyboard to become numlocked correctly.  This is
almost an acceptable workaround, but it did take a lot of work to
find.
