When I was with Breezy (5.10) I never needed the essential codecs
pack. Just the gstreamer packages specified there, and the w32codecs
pack (which is also linked to in the wiki). See if that works, and
just _move_ out the essential codecs to some place safe before you
install w32codecs. Hope that works.
And I think Dapper is good enough to be given a try now.
