That seems odd to me -- I thought taking Windows out of the equation

It's the "and so on" bit that's confusing me!  But it looks like from
what Michael, Tom, "default" and you are saying that either ftp or ssh
are the way to go.  I have set up an ftp server on Windows in the past,
it's not difficult.  I was under the (mistaken?) impression that Samba
is primarily useful for integrating Windows machines into a network that
includes one or both of Linux and OS X.  I maintain a Microsoft-free
home (except for an MS USB mouse), so I didn't think I'd really need
Samba.  It seems like more than I'd need.
