This is simply, shall we say, inaccurate. There's a whole website devoted

While this is true, *some* winmodems *are* supported. The linmodems site
has a script that can determine what type of modem is installed, and
suggest possible drivers when such exist.

The commercial Conextant/ Linuxant drivers are only one case. For example,
for two years I was quite effectively using a Lucent "Winmodem" with
ltmodem/ltserial drivers, under both Mandrake Linux and Debian. The drivers
cost nothing, and worked very well indeed.
Chanchao, please don't discourage people on the basis of inaccurate and
misleading information.
