How to edit PDF?

I use Adobe full version in windows all the time when reading studies -
I constantly highlight text and add the occasional notes in yellow next
to the text.

Switching to Ubuntu has been great, but this is one of the last major
hurdles for me.  Being unable to make notes in studies is a huge deal
for me, and all of the options listed above are largely impractical.

Does anyone know if development of XPDF or any of the PDF readers is
implementing at least highlighting of text?  I could possibly deal
without being able to add my notes for now...

I would like to support whatever project people think is closest to
adding this functionality by donated, but the XPDF page doesn't mention
editing at all.  Perhaps KPDF (I use Kubuntu) is close or has thought
about adding this.  Well if anyone knows, please let me know.
