That's changing. My ISP (Cox Communications) even offers home
networking for which they charge extra. I felt it silly to pay them an
extra monthly fee for something I could set up myself for the cost of
the router and some CAT6 cables.
So I did. About 7 months after that they had an outage. When it came
back I couldn't get it to start back up so I called tech support. The
first thing she said was "I can't see your computers, do you have a
router?". I said "yes". She said, OK reset it then you should be fine".
So I did and she then saw the computers on our network.
That sounded to me like they were cool about it.
I was with BellSouth (DSL) several years ago and I do know that they
refused to talk to you if you had anything but one Windows or Mac-based
computer connected directly to their DSL Modem.

I've thought about "lying" if the need arose, but in the past I'd be
told things like "ok, right click on 'My Computer' blah blah blah..."
