startx display number makes big difference

I just upgraded breezy to the latest xorg(full system upgrade.)  Firefox
was displaying differently.  It's "personal toolbar" had a larger, less
appealing font.  I'm using startx and fvwm not gnome.

Interestingly, doing
startx -- :1
completely fixes the issue.  (This lands on the terminal which apparently
Ubuntu uses for default system boot messages.)  Why is that?
