totem, xine, kaffeine et al are all very good and well, but they can
be problematic - I can't get xine to stop jerking on my machine for
example.
At this point nothing even remotely comes close to mplayer. It handles
any format I throw at it, works on any just about platform with just
about any hardware, and cpu utilization never goes above 50% of my
machine even when playing a dvd with all bells and whistles turned
on. BUT, there is that ginormous man page to contend with first.
Have you considered gmplayer?
