Packages ! get the current ones???

I would love too, once I get down compiling a kernel, compiling a app, 
...etc
modifying a lib or two. (a couple of hacks ) and wham a novice at large.

otherwise newbie at large. (coming from Mac and windows ) a one week ago.
got two books, study time. ...but really I can understand, the fact its 
overwhelming
for the maintainers to keep current say version 3.1 is available for 
download, but 3.1.1 is the current..ie
but 2.x to 3.x oops there a jump

Once, I'm comfortable in Linux YES I Will maintain some packages.
