Just before you do... I don't understand:

You have an fancy new Core Duo (as I do)

-- But you want to run a userspace daemon?

What's wrong with ondemand, conservative and powersave

govenors. They are fast and effective and don't required

an extra process.

I'm guessing that if you have speedstep-centrino compiled as

a module then the various govenors will be compiled as modules

too. And hence may not be available by default.

I'm not certain of the module names as I always compile them in

but a "find /lib/modules -iname 'ondemand'" will probably find them.

Also,

Have any of you tried CPU hotplugging (ie. turning off a core
completely

, and turning it back on again when needed)? You can powerdown a

processor with:

echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online

and echo 1 to power it back up...

For me the processor goes offline OK and the system is happy with one

processor, but when I online it again the system reboots.

Same for you?
