I've got a client I've just upgraded to Dapper (to get the latest
Firefox) and printing broke. I reinstalled a local (HP840C) printer
and it works fine. I use the cups web interface to manage printing
rather than the Gnome tools (you need to add yourself to the 'shadow'
group) - http://localhost:631

However, the network printers won't work even after reinstall, trying to
print gives:

/usr/lib/cups/backend/smb failed

Googling revealed it as a known issue but I haven't checked the bug reports.

Regards

Clive
