Packages ! get the current ones???

This one is easy, as long as you know how to open the terminal. Type in
the terminal:

    sudo apt-get update
--------------------

Enter your password when it asks for it. Now Synaptic should be
available to give you the latest packages, at least the latest packages
that are available in the Ubuntu repos. The very latest packages can
sometimes only be found at the official site for the particular
package, however, that shouldn't make a big difference.
