I remember reading that journaled HFS+ is still buggy in the latest
linux kernels, so I believe they make the filesystem read-only by
default until it's more thoroughly debugged.

For those bleeding-edge folks who are trying it, the file structure
can get damaged because the journal doesn't get updated in a way Mac
OS X prefers. I just Googled it and found several postings confirming
that situation as of just a few months ago.

I did find an article that recommeded reformatting an iPod to use
FAT32 if you're needing to use it cross-platform. (The easiest way is
using the Windows version of iTunes. I have no idea if iTunes runs
under Wine.) Macs, PCs and Linux can all read and write FAT32. You'll
just have to re-copy all your tunes.
