386 vs 686 kernel? And uninstall linux-image-2.6.15-21-386 removes Linux-386?

This would happen if sometime in the last week or two you disabled the
"restricted" repository, so now you're only getting new linux-image
packages (from main) but not new linux-restricted-modules packages.
Since "linux-$flavour" depends on both, it is in restricted.

You should ideally "apt-get install linux-686", yes.
