Is acpi needed for Desktop computers?

I tried
acpi=off bootprompt
everything is enabled in bios. POS (Power on suspend) is selected
rather than STR (Suspend To Ram).
Do you think that my power supply is bad? But why did it happend after
Dapper upgrade?
Any more suggestions?
