How to set cursor theme in gdm?

When gdm starts it usees the plain default Xorg cursor theme here.
But what ever i choose with:
update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme
the theme does not change.
I also tried:
$ sudo cp /usr/share/themes/Human/cursor.theme /etc/X11/cursors/core.theme
but does not help, too.
How to change the theme?
