oddity with burning audio

I've been having problems using Serpentine to burn audio CDs. After
some investigation, here's what I've come up with:

* I can burn data CDs using cdrecord from the command line just fine.
Any graphical applications that depend on cdrecord for burning data
CDs also work.

* I can burn audio CDs using cdrecord from the command line just fine.

* Serpentine, according to the docs I've been able to find, doesn't
depend on cdrecord but instead does its own thing written in python.
Serpentine is _not_ working for me. I get an "Error: write failed to
start" message whenever I try to use it.

So my questions are:

* Anybody have this problem with Serpentine, and/or know how to resolve it?

* Anybody have another Gnome-compatible application to suggest that
works well as a graphical front end to burning audio CDs? (Please,
don't suggest K3B; at the moment I'm sticking with a Gnome desktop,
and I'm not interesting in pulling in stuff from KDE to fix things
that Ubuntu's Gnome desktop doesn't get right.)
