Dapper Upgrade - failure just before cleanup

I upgraded my home computer to Dapper on the weekend.

The upgrade procedure died suddenly with a very unhelpful error message
just before the cleanup part of the procedure should have started.
Sorry I didn't get a note of the message but it to basicly say there has
been an error and your system might not be in a state where it will
reboot and nothing about what the actual error was. It seemed to have
installed 100% of the new packages and would have been about to start
the cleanup when this happened.

The system does boot into Dapper happily. I restarted update-manager a
few times thinking it might resume where it left off. I just needed to
remove encfs and firestarter manually and then reinstall encfs to get
all errors cleared. I did all this via synaptic.

Does the cleanup part of the upgrade procedure do anything useful? Is
it possible to run the cleanup manually?

Thank you
Steven
