usb devices do not mount

Firstly I'd like to thank the attention of Mr. Derek and Mr. Harbi.

I've posted this message because the behaviour of Ubuntu 5.10 was rather
unusual. It just stopped mounting the USB devices, like pendrives and
digital cameras. Me and a number of users could not fix the problem.
Since the main proposal of Ubuntu is to be a quality user-oriented Free
Software distribution, then this should not happen.

Also I know that the fstab solution could solve the problem -- but I'm
sure that it is not the best one. My question is: what should we do to
recover to system to the original condition, where the usb devices are
mounted automatically. Just that! And not philosophical discussions,
please.
