I have a 3 yr old atheros-based card that initially didn't work under dapper 
or edgy.  The problem was easily fixed by disabling IPV6 support.  Follow the 
Dapper directions at: 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WebBrowsingSlowIPv6IPv4
